pSHIELD – pilot embedded Systems

Artemis prosjektet pSHIELD (pilot embedded Systems arHItecturE for multi-Layer Dependable solutions) har fått støtte av Norges Forskningsråd under prosjektnr 203172/I40 den 2 juli 2010.

The Norwegian contribution described here is part of the multi-national Artemis pSHIELD project ES459356. Kick-off took place on 8. June 2010

The project partners are: SESM scarl (Coordinator), Elsag Datamat, Selex Comms, ANSALDO-STS, Eurotech, STM, TRS, Università Genova, Università Sapienza Roma,ATHENA, Hellenic Aerospace, Integrated Systems Development, European Software Institute, Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa , Critical SW, Atos-Origin, Center for Wireless Innovation Norway, Movation AS, THYIA Tehnologije, Acorde Seguridad

Prosjektansvarlig

Movation AS, Josef Noll

Øvrige konsortiedeltakere

CWI v/UNIK, Mushfiq Chowdhury

CWI v/UiA, Vladimir Oleshchuk

Goal and Objectives

The SHIELD project aims at addressing Security, Privacy and Dependability (SPD) issues in the context of Embedded Systems (ESs) as “built in” rather than as “add-on” functionalities. Enhanced embedded Services built on the layered SHIELD platform (see fig. 1) will profit from a dependable security architecture, where data and access are provided according to the trust level between the requester and the provider of the data.

The overall goal for the pSHIELD project is:

to create services based on input from embedded systems (ESs) at the edge of the network in order to contribute to the development of the Internet of Things.

The technical goal of pSHIELD is:

to create an innovative, modular, compossible, expandable and cost-effective architectural framework addressing the SPD functionalities in ESs. The development of a new generation of “SPD-ready” ESs can address the secure and privacy-aware Internet of Things.

The social/business goal of pSHIELD is to:

By making SPD as intrinsic elements of industrial processes, the project aims at efficiency and cost effectiveness of processes, and provide services for a more convenient and safer environment.

The concept of pSHIELD is to provide system’s functionalities, from the SPD perspectives, in a tightly integrated way incorporating nodes (sensors and devices), networks and middleware. The goals of pSHIELD will be achieved by approaching SPD at four levels: node (hardware and firmware), network (protocol), middleware (software) and overlay. The output of each layer will be available at the upper level as indicated in fig. 1, which will take advantage of SPD features developed at a lower level. SPD functionalities will be inserted seamlessly and transparently in each layer. The SPD functionalities can be dynamically enabled/disabled following the decisions of the Overlay. Such an approach will affect ESs design cost-effectiveness because of the intrinsic SPD features of each layer in pSHIELD architecture. It ensures that future architecture will have the capability of being designed according to pSHIELD SPD requirements in a scalable and interoperable way.

For each layer, the project will improve the state of the art of the most promising SPD technologies and solutions (hardware and communication technologies, cryptography, middleware, smart SPD applications, etc.) and will integrate other technologies at their state of the art. Finally all of them will be enriched with compossible functionalities for coordinating and harmonizing the various SPD solutions.

Expected Impact to Norwegian Industry

pShield is a pilot demonstrator to enable embedded systems as real-time providers for industrial processes. The specific use case targeted for this project is the sensor integration from trains into an embedded system (ES) management tool. The use case providers are the Norwegian Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket – JBV) and Telenor Objects, with Movation acting as a mediator between the academic and the use-case partners.

The exploitation of the results is essential for demonstrating the economic impact of the research. All involved norwegian partners/industries are committed to the exploitation of the results. Exploitations of the pSHIELD-N results will offer a strategic opportunity for the longer-term development of our Norwegian partners’ business both in Europe and globally. Success of commercial exploitation of one use cases may open the possibility of extending it to similar use cases having substantial business opportunities in bigger market segments for Norwegian industries. For the telecommunication operators, competition is quite high in their core market segments and unconventional services to other areas will increase the revenue of these companies.
