Intervju med Dagfinn Myhre, Senior Vice President Research Agenda

Innovating to meet the everyday needs of people and businesses

Telenor’s Dagfinn Myhre gets to be a part of great innovation each and every day. As the Head of the Research Agenda for Telenor Group, he works alongside a team of researchers who study ways to improve the customer experience and create new opportunities in the market.

Innovation is a part of the Telenor strategy, and it is an important part of how the company conducts its business. Dagfinn shares his view on how Telenor defines innovation and how the company innovates for its customers.

Q: How does Telenor define innovation?
Dagfinn: Innovation is the successful introduction of something new, and it can be incremental or radical. It is the key to our future. We look at the everyday needs of people and businesses, and we seek ways to create value for our customers through innovative content and services. But innovation is not only in the form of new services. We can innovate through new and improved production processes, business models and customer experiences.

Q: Why is innovation an important part of the Telenor strategy?
Dagfinn: Our industry is in constant change, which creates new opportunities. These changes can come in the form of increased competition, technological development, new business models, new software-based services, new social networking channels, changes in customer behaviour, and more. Our future depends on taking new positions in the market and using these opportunities to offer better products and services to our customers.

Q: Does innovation mean that you must invent something completely new for a market?
Dagfinn: No, not necessarily. We can be innovative by expanding or modifying a current customer offering, such as a change in pricing. Take the example of Uninor, who wanted to find a way to put customers in control of the costs. They found that dynamic pricing worked for their customers, and customers were made aware of certain times of day or locations when they would be charged less to make a phone call.

Q: Does Telenor ever take risks when it comes to innovation?
Dagfinn: Innovation is all about taking risks. The risk increases when we take new positions and develop new services, for example financial services. In Pakistan we saw an opportunity to enter the financial services market, as a large part of the population was without banking services and yet owned mobile phones. Telenor Pakistan launched Easypaisa with Tameer Bank, and now the people of Pakistan can pay their bills with their mobile phone.

Our risk becomes even greater when we start creating options for future business, for example with machine-to-machine technology (or the Internet of things). We are developing ways to make electric cars communicate with utility companies, help healthcare providers remotely monitor patients or even remotely diagnose problems with vehicles or other equipment. We have been in M2M for over a decade, but much of the innovation in this field is unprecedented and therefore involves a bit of risk.

Q: Does research drive innovation?
Dagfinn: Research is a part of innovation. Innovation is not always linear, and ideas often have several sources. Innovation may be based on a market need or it may be the outcome of a study we conducted.

Q: So then, how does Telenor innovate?
Dagfinn: We take a broad approach that encompasses both the expansion of our core business as well as the creation of options for future business. To do this, we conduct numerous pilot projects and experiments, and we conduct research. Then, we implement an idea and engage in direct business through the Telenor business units.

Q: Do we innovate alone?
Dagfinn: We innovate in close cooperation with customers and partners; this is what we call “open innovation”. Innovation doesn’t happen alone, it happens when working with others. Many of the new services today are developed as part of an open innovation ecosystem. It’s up to Telenor to enable them for customers. Telenor can’t do everything itself, so we must find the best services and make them available to our customers.

Q: Will Telenor’s definition of innovation change in the coming years?
Dagfinn: Growth is driven by advances in technology, innovative new services and changing customer behaviours. At Telenor, we must continue to improve the customer experience and be innovative in terms of future business models. We must be able to continuously develop our role in a changing industry.

Jernbaneverket, som bidrar til use-case, hjelp til demonstrasjon og er en mulig anvender av pSHIELD teknologi

Goal and Objectives

The SHIELD project aims at addressing Security, Privacy and Dependability (SPD) issues in the context of Embedded Systems (ESs) as “built in” rather than as “add-on” functionalities. Enhanced embedded Services built on the layered SHIELD platform (see fig. 1) will profit from a dependable security architecture, where data and access are provided according to the trust level between the requester and the provider of the data.

The overall goal for the pSHIELD project is:

to create services based on input from embedded systems (ESs) at the edge of the network in order to contribute to the development of the Internet of Things.

The technical goal of pSHIELD is:

to create an innovative, modular, compossible, expandable and cost-effective architectural framework addressing the SPD functionalities in ESs. The development of a new generation of “SPD-ready” ESs can address the secure and privacy-aware Internet of Things.

The social/business goal of pSHIELD is to:

By making SPD as intrinsic elements of industrial processes, the project aims at efficiency and cost effectiveness of processes, and provide services for a more convenient and safer environment.

The concept of pSHIELD is to provide system’s functionalities, from the SPD perspectives, in a tightly integrated way incorporating nodes (sensors and devices), networks and middleware. The goals of pSHIELD will be achieved by approaching SPD at four levels: node (hardware and firmware), network (protocol), middleware (software) and overlay. The output of each layer will be available at the upper level as indicated in fig. 1, which will take advantage of SPD features developed at a lower level. SPD functionalities will be inserted seamlessly and transparently in each layer. The SPD functionalities can be dynamically enabled/disabled following the decisions of the Overlay. Such an approach will affect ESs design cost-effectiveness because of the intrinsic SPD features of each layer in pSHIELD architecture. It ensures that future architecture will have the capability of being designed according to pSHIELD SPD requirements in a scalable and interoperable way.

For each layer, the project will improve the state of the art of the most promising SPD technologies and solutions (hardware and communication technologies, cryptography, middleware, smart SPD applications, etc.) and will integrate other technologies at their state of the art. Finally all of them will be enriched with compossible functionalities for coordinating and harmonizing the various SPD solutions.

Expected Impact to Norwegian Industry

pShield is a pilot demonstrator to enable embedded systems as real-time providers for industrial processes. The specific use case targeted for this project is the sensor integration from trains into an embedded system (ES) management tool. The use case providers are the Norwegian Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket – JBV) and Telenor Objects, with Movation acting as a mediator between the academic and the use-case partners.

The exploitation of the results is essential for demonstrating the economic impact of the research. All involved norwegian partners/industries are committed to the exploitation of the results. Exploitations of the pSHIELD-N results will offer a strategic opportunity for the longer-term development of our Norwegian partners’ business both in Europe and globally. Success of commercial exploitation of one use cases may open the possibility of extending it to similar use cases having substantial business opportunities in bigger market segments for Norwegian industries. For the telecommunication operators, competition is quite high in their core market segments and unconventional services to other areas will increase the revenue of these companies.

This is the main goal of the Innovation Stock Exchange for good ideas in companies.

Our process consists of the following steps

Every member of the Movation Community can launch ideas

These ideas undergo a selection by experts at Movation

If the idea is accepted, then it will be rated by experts in the area and receive a scorecard

As soon as the scorecard is released, the idea is published on the Stock Market

Invest wisely

Every Movation Community member has 100.000 Movation Dalar, which can be used for investments in good ideas

The community members will judge the ideas, as well as experts will do

In regular intervals Movation will invite for a “winner ceremony” of the stock market, where Movation Dalar investments are converted into real shares of the company that wins the idea process.

So, please be invited to join the Innovation Stock Exchange

We learned that planning Innovation needs a cultural change in your organisation.

Innovation by Design has been our key focus in Movation.

We learned that planning Innovation needs a cultural change in your organisation. You need to make innovation visible in all parts of your company, which includes

Having people to understand that innovation is not only technological innovation,

Make people enthusiastic about changes, and help them not to get afraid of these changes,

Have ambassadors on all levels of your organisation,

Create environments for new thinking, both as physical meeting places and as virtual meeting places

And last but not least: Measure Innovation, and let your leaders report the Innovation Index of their part of the organisation.

If you are in doubt on how to measure innovation, get in contact and we provide you with examples of our Movation Innovation Index.
