Apple comes up with mobile key (iKey)

Apple has a patent on using an iPhone for opening a door. See report from gizmag.

I’m really wondering how Apple could get a patent? The process is described already since years:

  • Telenor’s mobile key (mkey) project (2002-2003)
  • Implementation of NFC reader as plugin to mobile phone. Developed by EPSYS and Telenor R&I in 2004.
  • Masterthesis at UNIK/UiO on “mobile key“, presented 5. September 2006
  • Opening doors through NFC, field test with farmers near Zürich

Josef Noll

Josef Noll is Chief Technologist in Movation, professor at the University of Oslo in the area of Mobile Services, as well as co-founder and steering board member of the Center for Wireless Innovation Norway and Mobile Monday Norway. Previously he was Group Leader of the Mobile Group in Telenor R&I in the Products and Markets group, coming from the European Space Agency (ESA ESTEC).
